Taking office in January 2011, Congressman Chip Cravaack pulled off an upset victory over Democratic incumbent and 18-term representative Jim Oberstar by only 4,400 votes. This made Cravaack the first Republican to hold the seat since 1947.

His tenure in the House of Representatives has been met with controversy. His support of fellow Representative Michele Bachmann for GOP leadership caused an uproar amongst many constituents. Additionally, Cravaack faced opposition from students in the Duluth, Minnesota area when he voted in favor of making cuts to the federal Pell Grant program. Roughly 30 percent of the students in his district lost a major source of financial aid.

The congressman also gained national notoriety for stating that Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was aiding terrorist organizations.

Representative Cravaack serves on the Homeland Security, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Science, Space and Technology committees in the House.
