Zachary Taylor was the 12th President. His resume before being elected to office included an illustrious 40-year military career with the US Army. Serving in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War and the Second Seminole War, he ultimately became very popular with the general populace in the Mexican-American War, garnering major victories for the US and helping expand the country’s territories to the Pacific.

During his presidency, he set the stage for the Compromise of 1850 and pushed for the moderate view of slavery. He died in office 16 months into his term. Historians believe he died from gastroenteritis.
