The Kitchen Debate refers to a discussion Vice President Richard Nixon conducted with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev during the opening of the American National Exhibition in Moscow on July 24, 1959. The event showcased an average American home featuring various technological improvements created by the United States that made life easier for the average person. During a tour, both engaged in a debate over the values of capitalism versus communism, primarily in the model home’s kitchen. The discussion was aired on television in both countries with interpreters speaking for each politician. This exchange helped position Nixon as a front runner for the Republican nomination in the upcoming presidential election and established the future commander-in-chief as an elder statesman.
