Kathy Castor is one of the few Democrats representing the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives. She covers the 11th congressional district, representing the majority of Tampa and St. Petersburg. Castor first took office in 2007, joining the wave of Democrats seizing control of Congress after ten years of Republican rule. Before running for Congress, Castor was a member of the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners where she worked hard to help seniors from being forced into HMOs. Today, she serves on the Budget and Energy and Commerce Committees. Unlike most Democrats, Castor voted against instituting the TARP bailout.

The representative’s reelection campaign is centered around a number of issues highly important to her and her constituents. After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, she is a strong opponent against offshore oil drilling. She is also pushing for Wall Street reform, making college affordable, keeping social security in place and creating a middle class tax cut.
